Crawfordsville – Will H. Hays Jr 84 former Crawfordsville mayor died at 5:40 a.m. Friday Aug 11 2000 in St. Clare Medical Center. He was born Dec 11, 1915 in Indianapolis and resided in Sullivan where he attended elementary school. From 1948 until moving to Crawfordsville in 1955, he resided in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was a 1933 graduate of Riverdale Country School of Bronx, NY. In 1937 he received a bachelor’s degree from Wabash, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He earned his doctor of law degree from Yale University Law School in 1940. In 1963 and 1967, he was elected mayor of Crawfordsville. He practiced law with Hays & Hays in Sullivan from 1940-42 and 1945-48 and was senior program officer of Lilly endowment of Indiana from 1963-69.  He also was a screenwriter for television and films, including You’re my Everything in 1949 and author of books, including Dragon Watch in 1954. He also was a Wabash College trustee. His marriage was to Virginia Henderson and she survives. Mr. Hays was an Army veteran serving from 1942-45 and reached the rank of Major. He also received the Legion of Merit. He was a member of Crawfordsville Elks, Sullivan Masonic Order, Kiwanis of Crawfordsville, Montgomery County Bar Association and American Legion Post 72.  Surviving with his wife are a son, Will H. Hays III of Bloomington and two daughters, Katherine Hays Fox of Lake Forest, Ill and Amelia Hope Mays of Bloomington. - kbz - loved that big C'villian smile, Mayor Hays !
